
Vigdís Finnbogadóttir was born in Reykjavík, Iceland and educated in France, Denmark and Iceland. She is known for her teaching and cultural leadership and directed the City Theatre of Reykjavík until she was elected president of the Republic of Iceland.
She was the first woman in the world to be elected head of state by universal suffrage. She is a dedicated spokesperson for the fight against desertification and for reforestation, for which she received the CERES Medal from the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in 1997.
She is a strong advocate for every field of cultural endeavour and was the first chair of COMEST, UNESCO’s Commission for Ethics in Science and Technology, from 1998 to 2002. Since 1997 she has been a UNESCO goodwill ambassador for languages.
