Jukka-Pekka Puro väitteli vuonna 1996 tohtoriksi puheviestinnän alalta Jyväskylässä. Vuodesta 1997 alkaen Puro on vaikuttanut pääasiallisesti Turussa, vaihdellen eri tehtävissä Turun Yliopistolla ja Turun Kauppakorkeakoulussa. Vuosina 2003-2004 hän toimi puheviestinnän ma. professorina Tampereen yliopistolla.
