Janne has a background as a long distance runner, with a gold medal in marathon running from the 2002 European Championships in Athletics as his greatest achievement. He is also the current holder of the Finnish record in marathon running with the time 2.10,46 from 2008.
Janne is a historian and achieved a doctor’s degree at Uppsala University in 2006 with his dissertation Political textbooks, where he investigated how the picture of the USA and Soviet Union in Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish school textbooks was influenced by the different foreign political situations of the three small states during the Cold war. Among his later research interests are the Swedish period in Finnish history as portrayed in Finnish school textbooks and local historiography and identity on islands in the Baltic sea.
