Our Three Voices in Decision-Making - 27.09.2010, 13:41

Written by: Rolf Jensen

Most – if not all – decisions in business are the result of at least three competing voices. We are all different – our way of organising the components for any decision – are the result of our personality and our environment. The following three voices are the ones that most often will compete for your attention – either your own inner voices or the voices of your colleagues:

The “just-the-facts Person”. The voice than asks for data, hard facts, numbers. The one who hates the idea of “gut feeling”. It is the rational person. He or she believes that if you have enough data then the decision is obvious. No need to argue.

The Sense Maker. The voice that would recommend that we look behind the data, the numbers, and start thinking about the real situation, not the one presented on the surface. It is the clever, experienced voice; it is a person who has studied the market place for a long time.

The Rebel. The voice that will always suggest innovative and radical solutions. This voice hates mainstream thinking. He or she is always in opposition and tend to see colleagues as unimaginative.

Do you recognise the three voices? They are all you; they are competing in your mind for your attention. They are your colleagues too.

In a forthcoming book (2012) all three voices are presented and given space on any subject – the book is about the future of the global market place.
